The majority of communication between horse and rider occurs through leg pressure and the rider’s seat. However, the reins are simply used to aid the rider. This style of training implements an increased level of contact through the reins and bit. Regarding the tight reins: our horses are trained and ridden in the classic Spanish Dressage style. Some horse breeds and genders are generally more prone to salivation – Andalusian stallions being among those. Because the horses find the bit ‘yummy’ they will increase their salivation levels (much like a person chewing gum). Many of our horses are ridden and trained with copper bits, which are more palatable than typical iron bits. They drool for a number of reasons – none of which are negative. The horses that you saw drooling were the Andalusian stallions. Many of our employees often comment that the horses are treated better than anyone else within the company – and although they say it jokingly, it’s really quite true. In regards to your concern about our horses, they are treated like absolute royalty.
